Honest budgets: less spin

Your money should fund services, not press releases.

WA Government campaign media has cost more than $205 million in four and a half years. Spending on advertising, research and polling reached $157.7 million in 2023–24, up almost 80% in nine years.

The same packages are announced again and again. One $72.6 million package appeared in 14 media statements. Budgets also assumed $9.4 billion of infrastructure would run late.

A better way is straight numbers that West Australians can check.

What we’d do

  • Cap government advertising, and ban it in the months before an election.
  • Publish one public register of every program, its total and its real spend.
